Single-Storey Stone Annexe

A low stone range with a hipped slate roof, stone quoins, and three painted timber windows set in dressed stone surrounds, with a glazed door and French doors at the return. The building sits on fresh light gravel with a large stone-flagged patio in front of it, a raised stone planting bed to one side, and a bench set against the wall.

Proportion is what makes a single-storey building of this kind look like it belongs rather than like an outbuilding in fancy dress: the window heights, the depth of the reveals, the overhang of the eaves and the way the hips meet the ridge.

The hard landscaping is part of the same job. The flagged area is laid to fall away from the threshold, the gravel is contained by an edge, and the raised bed is built in the same stone as the building — which is why it reads as one piece of work rather than a building with a patio added later.
