Stone House & Outbuildings

A barn-form house of coursed local stone under a stone-slate roof, with small stone-dressed openings to the upper floor and a tall glazed screen set into what reads as the original cart opening. To the left, a single-storey stone outbuilding with a matching slate roof and a timber field gate; to the right, a second range with new stone heads and cills. The yard between them has been re-laid in light gravel, edged by a coped stone wall.

The tell in this photograph is the pointing and the coursing: the elevations match each other and match their own openings, which is the whole difficulty of stone building work. New stone has to be selected for bed height and colour, laid to the same coursing as what is already standing, and pointed to the same profile.

Glazing a large historic opening is the other half of the job — a modern screen fitted into a stone reveal has to be detailed to keep weather out without drawing attention to itself.
