Stone Terrace Cottages, Restored

A row of stone cottages photographed from the lane: coursed weathered stone elevations, a stone-slate roof with rebuilt ridge and chimney stacks, white-painted multi-pane sash windows in dressed stone surrounds, and painted front doors with lanterns above them. A coped stone wall and new stone paving run along the frontage.

Terraces are harder than they look, because everything is shared. The roof, the stacks, the rainwater goods and the frontage all have to be dealt with as one, and the window and door openings have to line through along the whole row or the elevation looks wrong from the pavement.

This is repair and restoration rather than replacement: the stone, the roof covering and the character of the elevation are all original — brought back, repointed and re-glazed, not swapped out.
